Sundio Group Boosts Business with Microsoft and Fusion-io

Posted: 02/17/2012

Microsoft recently published a case study on Sundio Group, an online travel firm that sells trips to holiday destinations throughout Europe.

With more and more travel companies moving their services online, Sundio Group needed a fast system that could not only give them a competitive advantage, but that could also handle fast company expansion. Sundio Group sought to update its Microsoft SQL 2005 architecture to the new Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Enterprise data management software. Along with this, Sundio Group adopted SQL Server 2012’s AlwaysOn availability group capability feature for better disaster-recovery and High Availability.

But Sundio Group didn’t stop there—it also replaced its SAN with Fusion ioDrives installed on its front-end servers, combined with SQL Server, to reduce latency. The study notes that the ioDrives are “optimized for SQL Server…[and] improve performance by storing data closer to the CPU.”

Two times a year, during peak travel seasons, Sundio’s sales volume spikes up to $4.3 million per day, almost ten times the usual sales volume. Any delay could translate to lost business. Sundio no longer needs to add more servers during those busy travel periods.

The study notes how the new Microsoft SQL Server solution benefits Sundio: “By improving performance and scalability, Sundio Group can take full advantage of sale periods and improve support for rapid business growth.”
