Host Europe GmbH Zaps Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming (MMOG) Database Bottleneck

Posted: 02/13/2012

Host Europe GmbH provides hosting services to a customer who runs a browser-based MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) at Host Europe’s data center. This customer maintains multiple virtualized databases, each with different I/O environments. The ability to scale these servers had reached its limit, and the costs of managing the server farm were getting out of hand. Host Europe GmbH needed to find a way to help its customer consolidate, while guaranteeing end-users top-notch performance.

Cue Fusion-io. After Host Europe GmbH’s customer moved its MySQL database onto Fusion ioDrives, the performance problems disappeared. In fact, the Fusion Powered system supports two to five times the workload of the previous system.

“The ioDrives provide consistently high performance for the workloads of massively parallel-managed virtual machines. We don’t have to worry anymore about load spikes that might cause servers to crash or interrupt application service,” said Thomas Ebbers, Host Europe’s Head of Product Management. “This is a solution that will help all of Host Europe’s customers. It enhances the capabilities of virtualization, allowing us to guarantee high service levels to all applications, under any load.”

By switching to Fusion-io, Host Europe GmbH also cut upfront costs with the best price/performance solution on the market, and reduced operating costs by cutting the customer’s hardware footprint by over 30 percent.
