FLASH REPORT: Big Data, Virtualization vs Cloud, and Woz's Birthday

Posted: 13 Jul 2012

In this week’s episode of the Flash Report:

eWeek gives us the top 10 reasons why Big Data is just beginning to reach its potential. The “Four-Vs” of Big Data – volume, variety, velocity, and value – are holding true as defining terms for this IT phenomenon in more ways than one, allowing this division to continue to progress in ways businesses never dreamed possible.

ITWorld discusses virtualization versus private cloud. This article defines both of the systems, as well as explains the differences in cost and downtime factors, and debates a few benefits and hindrances of each.

Engadget reports that MIT researchers have developed a chip that can harvest energy from multiple sources: light, heat and vibrations. The University has said the key to the chip is a sophisticated control system that’s able to rapidly switch between the three sources at all times to prevent any of that energy going to waste. Collected, energy is then stored in capacitors to be used later.

Next, io9 announces that Ukrainian students recently developed a pair of gloves that can translate sign language into speech. The gloves work by translating the movement of your hands into text then into words using a text-to-speech engine.

And finally, we’d like to wish a very happy birthday to Apple co-founder and Fusion-io Chief Scientist, Steve Wozniak, on August 11. If you’d like to send him your own birthday wishes, check out our blog for instructions.
